We are thrilled to share that Action for Advocacy and Development Sierra Leone (AAD-SL), with generous funding from Trocaire, has successfully Supported Makeni City Council to clean 30 canals throughout the beautiful city of Makeni. The project was launch on July 27, 2024, at the Makeni City Council Hall, bringing together key stakeholders to address our environmental concerns and improve our community’s health.
The launch event featured inspiring statements from one of AAD-SL Board Member (Lawyer Amidu Fornah), the City Mayor (Mayor Abubakarr Kamara), representatives from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA),and EPA all emphasizing the importance of this initiative for the betterment of Makeni city.
Mr. Ibrahim F. Kamara, (Director of AAD-SL), presented an overview of the project emphasizing the support from Trocaire. He highlighted that the current initiative is proactive, focusing on potential flood risks identified areas, unlike previous reactive efforts. The project’s main goals are to maintain the drainage system’s capacity for heavy rainfall and to educate Makeni residents about proper drainage maintenance practices.
He also discussed the project procurement items and it labor, of which are: 250 shovels, 75 wheelbarrows, 250 hard hats, 250 pairs of gloves, 250 nose masks, and 250 pairs of rain boots, with 250 youths carrying out the canal clearing.
In his statement as a key note speaker, Mayor Abubakarr Kamara expressed gratitude to attendees and recognized AAD-SL’s ongoing support amid the city’s history of flooding. He commended the Flood Mitigation Committee for its effectiveness in reducing severe flooding incidents. Emphasizing the importance of human responsibility in flood management, he urged councilors and supervisors to actively monitor the project and called for a united effort to ensure its success for the community.
The entire Activity was chaired by the Chief Administrator (Daniel Kpumuku ) of Makeni City council.
The canal clearing project began on July 27, 2024, and will continue until August 5, 2024, the event was officially marked by AAD-SL’s symbolic tool handover to Makeni City Council and a demonstration of the work.
